Principal’s Message

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at Highland High School, home of the Bulldogs!

On behalf of the faculty and staff at HHS, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to our school’s website.   HHS is a school of approximately 1,000 students, 60 faculty and 30 support staff.

The HHS schedule is a traditional 7 period day, with an added plus: students have a school-wide, focused tutor time (FTT) where students may complete homework or get assistance from their teachers. FTT has received high marks from parents, teachers and students.

Speaking of high marks, HHS is proud to be recognized by US News and World Reports as one of the top 100 schools in Illinois.  In addition, for the last two years, we have earned the highest PARCC scores in the county. At HHS, teachers encourage students to engage in higher-level thinking in all content areas. Teachers use the Instructional Practices Inventory (IPI) to collect and study data to improve their students' learning experiences. Last year, department chairs completed a book study on Dr. Angela Duckworth's "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance."  We have incorporated "grit" into the classroom and look forward to this year's book study, Dr. Carol Dweck's "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success." Grit and growth-mindset work together to provide our students the tools they need to be successful in school and beyond.

Our district’s mission is to “inspire and empower life-long learners.” HHS continues to work toward our goal of “Excellence in Education Every Day.” We offer a diverse curriculum that includes dual credit and advanced placement courses. These classes allow HHS grads the opportunity to enter post-secondary education with college credit. HHS also boasts a variety of clubs, organizations and IHSA athletic activities.

We aspire to live up to our motto, "We Are One! Staff-Students-Community!" We believe that education is a collaboration process that incorporates the efforts of students, parents, faculty and the community. Collaboration is a key component for a successful school.  With that in mind, my door is open. Please feel free to email me kgauen@highlandcusd5.org, call me (654-7131), or stop by for a visit. Looking forward to a great 2017-18 school year!
